Soulful journeys a step-by-step guide

As you hike the trails – whether to summits adorned with prayer flags and dizzying drops or through forested valley floors of unmatched beauty – you’re guaranteed a feast for the eyes. But just when the altitude makes the going tough, Bhutan rewards you, by feeding your soul.

SOULFUL JOURNEYS: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE

When you step out of the car and onto the trails, you unlock a different facet of the Kingdom’s magic, unfolding into an unforgettable journey of discovery. You’ll gain new insights and make meaningful connections as you go, leaving a part of yourself in Bhutan and carrying a piece of it with you forever.

PHOBJIKHA VALLEY

The Phobjikha Valley, also known as the Gangtey Valley, offers a relatively gentle but incredibly scenic winter hike. The Gangtey Nature Trail, about four to five kilometers long, takes you through pine forests to gently undulating pastures dotted with traditional Bhutanese architecture and glimpses of the Gangtey Monastery.

Now your legs are warmed up, why not try the Loma Longtey Trail, which begins at Pele La Pass and winds through a small village, where yak herders put up their camps. As you reach Kayche La Pass at 3,700 meters, the valley extends out before you in all its beauty. Winter is also the season when the endangered black-necked cranes soar above the valley, their graceful presence adding a poignant reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty, offering a serene and moving testament to the delicate balance of life in this enchanted realm.

DRUK PATH TREK

For those seeking a multi-day adventure, the Druk Path Trek is a fantastic winter option. This six-day trek (which can be completed faster for more experienced hikers), connects the valleys of Paro and Thimphu, passing through alpine forests, high ridges, and beautiful lakes. The trail is less crowded in winter, offering solitude and a sense of exploration. Highlights include the Jangchulakha Lake and the stunning views of Mount Jomolhari and other snow-capped peaks.

BUMTHANG OWL TREK

The Bumthang Owl Trek is a three-day hike that offers a great mix of natural beauty and cultural experiences. The trail takes you through dense forests of blue pine, fir, and bamboo, with panoramic views of the Bumthang Valley. In winter, the snow-covered landscapes add a layer of serenity. The trek also passes through villages and ancient monasteries, providing insight into the local culture.

CHELE LA PASS

For a shorter yet rewarding winter hike, Chele La Pass is an excellent choice. Located at an altitude of 3,988 meters, it is one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. The hike from the pass to Kila Nunnery, about two hours, offers panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including Mount Jomolhari. The trail is relatively easy and provides a great opportunity to experience Bhutan’s high-altitude landscapes.

Whether you’re seeking a challenging trek or a leisurely walk, winter hikes in Bhutan offer a unique blend of adventure and natural beauty.
